Naknek

I had the opportunity on Monday to fly to a village on the Bristol Bay with a friend to see some of her family. We flew out of Anchorage on a twin turbo prop airplane. The pilot's first attempt had us in the air for about 20 minutes or so and then he announced that we were turning around and heading back to Anchorage because the guy that takes care of the runway hadn't gotten it cleared yet. About an hour and a half later we took off again and had a smooth hour plus a bit flight. We landed in King Salmon and then took the only road to the only place it goes, a village called Naknek. This area is right on the Bristol Bay and is basically a fishing and fish packing and processing area. We were there for about two days and then flew back home. Here are some pictures...

The sea ice while flying out over the ocean...it was so cool!!
A map (sorry it's not great) of where I was...Anchorage is north and we flew into the town called King Salmon and then drove to Naknek (kind of central on the map)
The twin turbo prop airplane we flew in
Shots of the fish canneries along the Naknek River
Tundra...this stuff is almost knee deep to walk in!! Just really spongy!

/>Sea ice along the shore
More canneries and "barracks" where summer workers stay
The mouth of the Naknek River where it opens into Bristol Bay

Tam this one is for you...four cans of Spam for 23.99
Sticker shock pics from the only grocery/trading post store
Ahhh....$10.00 for milk!!

I love the shot of the blue barracks. What a trip, looks beautiful there! We have been thinking about you guys a lot lately- Josiah and I are reading a book called "The Year of Miss Agnes," by Kirkpatrick Hill, and it is all about a little fishing village. Hope you have a great day!
