Wow time flies! I remember all of the waiting, and waiting, and waiting as Naomi took her sweet time coming into this world. The swollen ankles, spending waaayyy too many hours at work to make the days seem shorter as I waited. Then finally she was here...and now 8 years later...unbelievable. She is such a smart girl, loves to read and ride horses. She's a wonderful big sister to Jeremiah (we're still working on her response to the other two:P) She has a beautiful smile and creativity like no other! She has a beautiful singing voice and loves to memorize Scripture verses. Happy Birthday sweetheart! We love you!

Fall in Alaska

Fall is upon is! We had freezing temps this morning and frost on Teepee Ridge. We've been enjoying going for long walks in the woods as a family enjoying the smells of fall, and the beautiful golden leaves. While there aren't all of the many hued colors we are used to with Wisconsin fall there is an unsurpassed beauty in the snow capped mountains, gleaming golden hillsides and blazing red underbrush. What an amazing Creator we have and what a privilege we have to serve Him in such an incredible setting!

So...not quite as planned

We got up early yesterday and headed to Palmer for the Alaska State Fair with much anticipation. We arrived by noon and stood and waited in line to get in for about 40 minutes. We wandered around a little and decided to do rides later on since the lines for tickets were astronomical!

We got some corn dogs for Ryan and the girls. Jeremiah had french fries dipped in ketchup. We said they could have cotton candy a little later on.

We went to check out the agricultural pavilion and the kids wanted their pics taken in these cute tractor cut-outs.

We got to see baby chicks hatching and newborn ones under the incubator lights...they loved that!
Lots of different animals to see...there was an alpaca that reached through the bars and licked a little baby girls hand...her parents weren't very happy. The kids especially loved the chickens and the rabbits.
So why are we at Taco Bell??? Well, we left the fair when it started raining, and raining and raining some more, and the temperature was only 46 degrees. The kids did get their cotton candy though :) We went to pick up some groceries in Wasilla and noticed that Jeremiah was feeling poorly and was quite feverish. We just were leaving Wasilla when we heard a loud pop and our transmission stopped working completely, on the side of the road, in the rain and cold. Well we were able to arrange a tow truck and a taxi and that's how we ended up at Taco Bell for three hours. We were picked up by a very generous co worker and our vehicle is still in Palmer...pray for wisdom. The transmission is covered by warranty but the nearest Dodge dealership is in Anchorage. Jeremiah is starting to feel better but still has a low grade fever. Maybe next year we'll have a great time at the fair!

Perspective

I really appreciated the perspective of this article written by Jason Weaver, a man we attended Bible College with, who has been struggling with undiagnosed chronic lymes disease for the past almost four years. This is an excerpt...

"I’ve learned that although we can enjoy a certain amount of victory over sin because of our position in Christ, we will not escape the affects of sin as long as we live in these sinful, infected bodies. I think the greatest victory we can achieve in this present life is to cling to Christ in faith in the midst of life’s violent turmoil. The height of the Christian life is dependence.

Allow me to put this thought into perspective. I used to view the Christian life as a fairly simple process: the more you trust in Christ and allow Him to work in you, the more you grow in holiness. Now, I still think that this is the ideal pattern, but I’ve learned that it’s not always that simple. In the last few years I’ve noticed that basic ‘Christian’ things, like being nice to people, have become exponentially more difficult than they used to be. My disease has wreaked havoc on my emotions and pushed my stress levels through the roof. So I found myself in a difficult situation: I was trusting in Christ seemingly more than ever, but externally my treatment of others didn’t seem to reflect this fact. I finally understand why old people are grumpy! Because they don’t feel good. When these fallen bodies begin to dysfunction, it affects our ability to respond to life appropriately. In these cases, the person’s observable actions do not necessarily reflect their dependence on the Lord. If a strong believer gets Alzheimer’s, the more the disease progresses, the more they will become impatient, irritable, and forgetful. This doesn’t mean they’ve slacked off in trusting in Christ, it means their mental functions are rapidly deteriorating and so they don’t interact with others the same way. As long as we are in these fallen bodies sin will impinge, to one degree or another, on our ability to reflect the character of Christ who lives in us.

This experience has brought me back to anticipating the glorious return of Christ. At any given time our experience of this life may be good or bad. But even when it is at its best, this life “cannot compare to the glory which will be revealed in us!” I praise God that He is with me now through the difficulty, but I can’t wait for the full experience of the salvation He accomplished for me!

I trust that this testimony can be of some encouragement to you all. We all go through trying times (James 1:2-18) and we need to look to Christ in the midst of them and eagerly wait for our final redemption!"

Visit from Mom and Dad

We've been enjoying a visit from Ryan's mom and dad for the past week. We've mostly had rainy cool weather but yesterday it was warm and sunny...so beautiful! They have been able to go horseback riding and today they are going up in an airplane to see the glacier and mountains from above in a small airplane with Duane King from Kingdom Air Corp. Last night we got a sitter for the kids and went out to Sheep Mountain Lodge for dessert and to hear the owner talk about his experiences with dog sled racing in the Iditarod. He won't be racing this coming March but his partner will be with their dog team. Very interesting to hear what all goes into the training for the team and the musher. Tomorrow through Saturday Ryan and his dad will be going on wilderness horse pack trip. A lot of hours in the saddle up in the mountains. Sounds like fun! Next week it's back to business but the summer camp season is done on Saturday so things will be quieter around here!

Williams Lake, British Columbia

Well this is the town where we spent a lot of time waiting...and waiting...and waiting...and received such grace and peace from our God! And blessings upon blessings! New friendships, fellowshipping with an unexpected group of believers, experiencing God's provision in ways previously unimaginable!! Here are some pictures of the fun we had with the children in this beautiful town.

North to Alaska - Day 6

The day started out beautifully. The kids were getting along pretty well. The scenery was beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed driving along the Fraser River Valley. Jeremiah really loved all of the tunnels. We stopped in Cache Creek for lunch at Subway. We pulled into Williams Lake, B.C. 4:00p.m. and got some Tim Hortons. On our way back out of town our transmission temperature shot up, the engine temperature went way up and the truck stopped driving. We sat for awhile waiting for the temperatures to go back down but the vehicle never recovered. A man stopped and picked Ryan up and took him back to town to arrange a tow truck.

We had the truck towed to the Dodge dealership and got a hotel room at the Coast Fraser Inn. The diagnosis was that the transmission was bad and we needed a new one.

We spent Thursday and Friday at the hotel and then through some friends who made phone calls, a local couple James and Jamie Tanis, took us in for the remainder of our stay. We have comfortable beds, food, lots of room for the kids and Brutus to run around, wireless internet, plenty of Tim Hortons coffee and wonderful fellowship. We really are very blessed!

Another amazing blessing is that a man (Dave Bedford) called us early in the morning and told us that he wanted the garage to call him so that he could arrange to pay for our new transmission costs! Wow what a blessing! The receptionist at the dealership was almost in tears as she heard about the wonderful way the Lord provided for our needs.

I will post some pictures tomorrow of the adventures our children have had here in Williams Lake. Hopefully we will be able to leave Williams Lake on Thursday morning early. The garage started working on the transmission today and said they should have it done by 3p.m. tomorrow. Thank you for all of your prayers as we've been walking this adventure with the Most High God!!
